RICHARD DREYFUSS, EMANUEL PERLMAN, BILL RILEY, JOHN KIEHL AND MORE TEAM UP FOR COMMEMORATIVE FREE APP
NEW YORK, NY, April 6, 2015—To observant Jews it's known in Hebrew as Yom Hashoah. To the rest of America, it's Holocaust Remembrance Day, decreed by Congress as law that the U.S. and governmental agencies conduct both learning and commemorations on Thursday, April 16 (the 2015 date).
As a human being, what will you do to consecrate the day and remember those exterminated by the Nazis?
Download the new FREE app called Sacred Ground: A Holocaust Enlightenment Ritual on your iPhone or iPad to immerse yourself in a 10-minute experience complete with musical and prayer components sung by cantor Emanuel Perlman and read by actor Richard Dreyfuss.
"By reciting or listening to these sacred words, you will perform a ritual – think of it as lighting a candle -- that manifests your intention, understanding and commitment to the idea of NEVER AGAIN, which is what Holocaust Remembrance Day is all about," said celebrity voice coach Bill Riley, who co-produced the app along with Perlman and John Kiehl, co-founder of Soundtrack Recording Studios in Manhattan where it was recorded.
The app is unique not only because there is nothing like it on the market, but because it also features pre-war pictures of Holocaust victims and families full of life and possibility before their lives were cut short by genocide.
"Just look at what's happening in the world today. It's a reminder of how easily it could happen to any of us," added Riley along with Baltimore's Rabbi Moshe Shualy, who also leads prayer on the app and was named after his grandfather who was murdered by the Nazis in front of his mother.
One prayer reads, "Passionate God grant perfect peace in your sheltering presence among the holy and the pure to the souls of all the men, women and children who were slaughtered, suffocated and burnt to ashes. May their memory endure inspiring truth and loyalty in our lives. May their souls be bound up in the bounds of life. May they rest in peace."
About the App's Producers
The Perlman-Riley-Kiehl collaboration encompasses a trio of faiths -- Jewish, Native American and Christian, respectively -- and was formed in 2013 through the establishment of pocketshul.com.
The company produces Jewish apps with artistic pedigree, interactive features and high production values. Other apps produced thus far include "A Cantor's Seder," "High Holiday Highlights," "Torah Blessings" and blessings for the infirmed and deceased, all of which are available on pocketshul.com. The apps are in traditional Hebrew texts and most can be seamlessly translated into English at the touch of a button, including Sacred Ground: A Holocaust Enlightenment Ritual.
For Emanuel Perlman, a lyric tenor and hazzan at Baltimore's Chizuk Amuno Congregation, the venture is an opportunity to bring the diminishing tradition of cantorial music and Jewish ritual into the digital era.
For Manhattan-based Bill Riley, voice coach to Perlman as well as long list of today's top vocalists, the partnership is an opportunity to honor peace-loving people of all faiths.
For John Kiehl, whose Soundtrack Recording Studios in Manhattan is frequented by leading film directors, the collaboration feeds his attraction and emotional bond to Jewish liturgical music, the predecessor to many other musical traditions. He is also a graduate of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
